SERIAL CASTING

Offering upper and lower limb casting for paediatric and adult clients

Shortened muscles may occur due to limited movement, muscle tightness or muscle stiffness from hypertonicity. Serial casting is a common non-invasive procedure used to stretch and lengthen muscles for the purpose of;

  • Making movement easier to maintain independent function and/or reduce the burden of care
  • Correcting joint alignment to prevent orthopaedic injury
  • Reduce pain

Serial casting will be only one part of the therapy program designed to help achieve your goals. Most patients will have exercises to complete during and after casting to ensure they maximise any gains in muscle lengthen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Serial casting should not be painful however some discomfort is expected as the muscle is taken to its end range. Discomfort for the first 2 days can occur as the body and muscles adjust to the new position.  This can often be settled with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Please discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist prior to taking any new medications.

Yes. The cast itself cannot get wet, but you will be provided with an appropriate cast cover that will ensure the cast stays dry. If the cast accidentally does get wet, you need to contact your therapist to arrange a cast change as this can lead to irritation and skin breakdown.

Yes. The aim of the cast is to provide a continuous stretch both day and night. Past clients with lower limb casting report that sleeping on your side is the position of greatest comfort and use of extra pillows between the legs is helpful to prevent rubbing.
